What to Expect From PCI Orientation
Deciding to become a Certified Home Health Aide in the State of New Jersey was a great choice! I could go on about the many benefits that this program offers but that would take all day. Even though the majority of this program is held online, you are required to attend a 2-hour orientation session to get acclimated with the training program’s expectations, ask questions, and hopefully establish some connections!
What to Expect?
For many of you, it’s been a few years, if not longer since you’ve been to an orientation. In my personal experience, orientation is one of the most important parts of any program because it outlines the course’s expectations and also leaves room to ask necessary questions. Both are key components for your success!
Luckily for you, Pawson Career Institute's orientation session lasts 2 hours at an on-site location! It may seem long, but trust me, it is important to absorb as much information as possible. During my orientation, I took detailed notes and asked questions to make sure I was beyond prepared for this course, and it really made a difference.
After completing the CHHA program and receiving my certificate, I put together a little guide for getting the most out of orientation. Some of the tips are no-brainers, but you’d be surprised at how many people forgot a pencil to jot things down with.
Kate’s Tips & Tricks
Bring a notepad and pen/paper: It’s never safe to assume that you will be provided with these items. Two hours means a lot of information will be covered so you will need to take detailed notes. Remember, orientation only happens once so write down everything! It is always better to be over prepared than under.
Always sit near the front (if you can): In high school, I had a bad habit of sitting in the back of large lectures. Bad Idea. Sitting near the front keeps you alert and focused, and it’s a prime location to ask questions.
Make Connections:
With your classmates: Even though it’s only orientation, CHHA classes are offered online so you might not be seeing these people again. As a naturally shy person, I find it difficult to strike up a conversation with people I’m not familiar with. Most times though, people are just as shy as you and sincerely appreciate a kind handshake and conversation.
With your teachers/professors: It is imperative that you introduce yourself to any professor, teacher, or staff member at orientation. Establishing connections early on will help not only in your training but can also lead to future career opportunities.
Have an elevator pitch: One great piece of advice I received and will take with me forever is my personal elevator pitch. Although I’m still young and my experiences are constantly changing, it is important to have a short little blurb about yourself when you introduce yourself.
Take some time before orientation to come up with yours if you haven’t! Now when you are in orientation, and someone shakes your hand and says, “tell me about yourself” you’ll be confident and able to start a conversation.
Remember, Orientation is an important component in your CHHA training. Arrive on time and ready to learn!
